Fishermen, Kampot, Cambodia 2019
The fishermen and their families in Kampot belong to Cambodia's Muslim community that is commonly known as “Cham”. They are descended from refugees from the ancient Kingdom of Champa who fled central Vietnam 500 years ago.
Today, the Kingdom of Cambodia is home to approximately 300,000 Muslims. Many of Cambodia's Cham live in poverty and have lower education levels, higher illiteracy rates, and poorer health indicators than the majority of the Cambodian population. Most Cham live in rural areas, where they work primarily as fishermen or farmers.
