Villages between life and death

Villages between life and death, Chinese and Vietnamese cemetery, Phnom Penh, Cambodia 2019

Smor San is a slum built on a cemetery that is still visited by relatives of the deceased. The inhabitants have constructed makeshift houses on top of tombs and coffins, or taken over vacant burial chambers. Here they eat dinner, watch TV, hang up clothes to dry, care for their kids, and sleep - just inches away from the dead. They moved into the cemetery with its 200 graves after sand dredging led to the collapse of their houses on the banks of the river.
